John G. Avildsen, the Oscar-winning director of <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Rocky</i> and <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Karate Kid</i>, died Friday in Los Angeles following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81.</div>

Like the titular boxer played by Sylvester Stallone, the film was an underdog itself: Despite a minuscule million-dollar budget, <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Rocky</i> became the highest-grossing film of 1976, winning three Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.Avildsen’s son Anthony confirmed that actor's death to the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-me-john-avildsen-obituary-20170616-story.html" style="background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #c81429; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank"><i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Los Angeles Times</i></a>, adding that Avildsen died at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.</div>

After a pair of low-budget films, Avildsen scored an unlikely hit with the 1970 anti-hippie drama <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Joe</i>, which starred Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon in her first big screen role.</div>

A year later, Avildsen rejoined the Rocky Balboa franchise to helm 1990's <i style="box-sizing: border-box;">Rocky V</i>.</div>

<strong>UPDATE 15/06/2017 1.22am:</strong> Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games has responded to OpenIV's removal, claiming that the software could interfere with the game's online modes and that it's working on a solution that will enable fans to still make single-player mods.</div>

"Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody," the developer said in a statement to <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/heres-rockstars-statement-about-take-two-shutting-down-gtas-openiv-modding-tool/" style="border: 0px; color: #0069ff; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">PC Gamer</a>. "We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players."</div>

According to OpenIV's lead developer GooD-NTS on the <a href="http://gtaforums.com/topic/889348-take-two-vs-modding/page-1" style="border: 0px; color: #0069ff; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">GTA forums</a>, Take-Two said OpenIV would "allow third parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation Take-Two's rights".</div>

GooD-NTS said that this accusation is unfounded and that the letter "is illiterate both technically and grammatically."</div>

That being said, the modder has chosen to back down from fighting the video game publisher.</div>

"Yes, we can go to court and yet again prove that modding is fair use and our actions are legal. Yes, we could. But we decided not to," GooD-NTS said.</div>

"Going to court will take at least few months of our time and huge amount of efforts, and, at best, we'll get absolutely nothing. Spending time just to restore status quo is really unproductive, and all the money in the world can't compensate the loss of time," they added.</div>

"So, we decided to agree with their claims and we're stopping distribution of OpenIV."</div>

Back in 2015 GTA developer Rockstar <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-05-07-rockstar-addresses-gta5s-mod-policy" style="border: 0px; color: #0069ff; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none;">claimed that mods were totally acceptable</a>, so long as they didn't alter the game's online modes. "No one has been banned for using single-player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single-player PC mods," Rockstar said at the time.</div>

GooD-NTS was adamant that it tried to play ball with Rockstar's rules and that OpenIV contained "No distribution of original data and code" and it did "absolutely no messing with online."</div>

This isn't the first time Take-Two has cracked down on GTA mods. In 2015 the publisher <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-08-10-rockstar-bans-gta5-modders-who-made-their-own-multiplayer" style="border: 0px; color: #0069ff; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none;">sent a cease and desist letter</a> to the folks behind multiplayer mod FiveM. Allegedly the publisher even <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-11-10-take-two-sends-private-investigators-to-gta5-modders-home-report" style="border: 0px; color: #0069ff; cursor: pointer; text-decoration-line: none;">sent private eyes</a> to intimidate a modder into pulling the plug on their project.</div>

<p dir="ltr">WASHINGTON (AFP) - Researchers from Hewlett-Packard Enterprise on Tuesday unveiled what they claimed was a breakthrough in computing with a new machine capable of handling vast amounts of data at supercomputing speeds.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The prototype named simple "the Machine" uses a new approach to computer architecture which the company says can be adapted for a range of Big Data applications, handling tasks at thousands of times the speed of existing devices.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The new system is called "memory driven computing" and uses light waves to transmit data instead of electrical impulses traveling over silicon, bypassing what engineers say is an obstacle to boosting computing speeds.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Sharad Singhal, who heads machine applications for HPE, said previous efforts to boost computing power "were running into a brick wall into computation" because computing needs are increasing beyond the capacity of existing chips.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Singhal said the project is an effort "to rethink computers from the ground up."</p>
<p dir="ltr">This means instead of a silicon chip at the heart of the computer, "we are putting data at the center," the researcher said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The prototype unveiled contains 160 terabytes of memory, capable of simultaneously working with the contents of approximately 160 million books, a task never before possible in a single unit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Singhal said supercomputers accomplish this task by stringing together clusters of processors, but that the new machine can handle this more efficiently within a single unit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">HPE unveiled its first prototype last year, but in the current version has increased the number of computing nodes from two to 40. Singhal said the company hopes to be able to commercialize the machine within a few years.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said one area where this can be useful is in health care, where powerful computing can analyze health studies, genetics and the potential for personalizing medical treatment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"These kinds of things can be done a lot faster on the architecture we are talking about," he said. "The research still needs to be done. But for the people working in those areas, we are giving them a more efficient tool."</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said this approach can help shorten the time in which medicines are developed by better analysis of their effectiveness and side effects.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"The secrets to the next great scientific breakthrough, industry-changing innovation, or life-altering technology hide in plain sight behind the mountains of data we create every day," said Meg Whitman, chief executive of HP Enterprise.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"To realize this promise, we can’t rely on the technologies of the past, we need a computer built for the Big Data era."</p>
<p dir="ltr">HPE, based in Palo Alto, California, was the created in November 2015 from the breakup of computing giant Hewlett-Packard into consumer and business units. </p>

<p dir="ltr">At the same time, Trump's failure to fill senior roles at federal agencies means he does not have a cadre of loyalists who can help rein in a bureaucracy that many in Trump’s orbit believe are out to leak information intended to damage the president. That has worsened the isolation of the White House in a city that relies on friends and allies to shake off a crisis.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The result is problems on multiple fronts: a government whose bonds with Congress, federal agencies and the public look increasingly fractured; an ambitious but stalled program of reforms; and a president whose low approval ratings threaten his party’s control of Congress in the 2018 midterm elections.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trump and his beleaguered staff, some White House aides told Reuters, feel besieged by a parade of negative stories and abandoned by fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill, as the furor over the firing of FBI Director James Comey and allegations that Trump tried to influence the probe into Russian meddling in last year’s election show little sign of abating.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Since Tuesday, when leaked excerpts of a purported memo by Comey detailing his conversations with Trump were made public, few Republicans beyond the White House have rushed to the airwaves to push back against suggestions that the president may have obstructed justice in asking Comey to end the probe into the conduct of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As the Russia probe entered a new phase on Wednesday with the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel in the investigation, a move that will likely place the White House under even stronger scrutiny, some Republicans expressed surprise that the White House had not done more to recruit them to backstop the president.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It’s kind of funny. The answer is no,” said Senator James Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, when asked by Reuters whether the White House had reached out to him to come to Trump’s defense. “I don’t know anyone else that has been contacted.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">    The White House did not respond to a request for comment on this story. Trump left on Friday for his first foreign trip as president. The 10-day trip will take him to Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Europe.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><b>STAFF VACANCIES</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">The administration has continued to struggle to fill the hundreds of open positions at senior levels of government that remain open, leaving the White House alone to grapple with one challenge after another.</p>
<p dir="ltr">For example, the Justice Department still lacks senior officials in place to head up the anti-trust, civil rights, criminal, and civil divisions, as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to its website.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At the Department of Homeland Security, the chiefs of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Transportation Security Administration, have yet to be confirmed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And at the Department of Education, a sprawling bureaucracy of 4,400 employees with a $68 billion budget, “all the key roles except for the secretary remain empty or filled with people in an acting capacity,” said a Department of Education official.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Nobody knows when or if they will be filled anytime soon,” said the official, who declined to be identified by name. The department did not respond to a request for comment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trump has frequently complained that Senate Democrats have stalled the approval process for his nominees. But the White House has also been slower to send nominees to the Senate than previous administrations.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Many top State Department posts also remain vacant. One consequence, say several officials, is that department experts played little role in briefing Trump for his telephone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin or his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, where officials say he disclosed highly classified intelligence.</p>
<p dir="ltr">State Department and intelligence officials say that as power is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few Trump loyalists in the White House, the roles of professional Foreign Service, intelligence and civil service officers have shrunk compared to past administrations.</p>
<p dir="ltr">For instance, said two U.S. diplomats, no one from the State Department attended Trump’s Feb. 15 meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - a sharp contrast from past administrations which would typically staff such a high-profile meeting with high-level State Department officials.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Asked for comment, the State Department would not address the circumstances of the meeting with the Russian officials in the Oval Office, but did speak to the efforts involving Netanyahu and the Middle East.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"As the president has repeatedly noted, Middle East peace is a top priority for this administration," a department spokesperson said. "This is an effort supported by both the White House and the State Department. Claims that the State Department has not been involved have no basis in facts." </p>
<p dir="ltr">Overall, more than 500 of the 557 federal government positions requiring Senate confirmation remain vacant. Only 33 nominees have been confirmed, and only 57 other positions now have a nominee, according to the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in Washington.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><b>CAPITOL HILL FRUSTRATIONS</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">A lack of communication from the White House left many Republicans on Capitol Hill frustrated as a sense of crisis mushroomed over the past week. One, Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own Russia probe, publicly complained about the situation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Tuesday morning, after news broke the previous evening that Trump had shared classified information with Russian officials, Burr said he couldn't get through to the White House, as the story lit up television news programs and buzzed online.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Maybe they’re busy,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Some Republicans said the constant focus on responding to allegations concerning the Russia probe was draining their caucus of focus and energy to push through their agenda.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Absent guidance, Republican staff members in Congress were beginning to devise their own strategy about how to respond to the gusher of bad news, one aide told Reuters.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And at the White House, with lines of communication to Congress seemingly frayed at times, a narrowing circle of people has come to the president's defense, as senior staff grapple not only with the cascade of revelations but with a president who at times contradicts on Twitter their talking points.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Everyone is just tired,” said one White House aide.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>Embattled US President Donald Trump faced explosive allegations that he divulged top-secret intelligence to Russian diplomats in the Oval Office, a charge the White House scrambled to rebut Monday</b>.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Washington Post reported that Trump revealed highly classified information on Daesh during a meeting last week with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moscow's man in Washington Sergey Kislyak.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a shocking twist, the intelligence reportedly came from a US ally who did not authorise Washington to share it with Moscow. That development that could shatter trust that is essential to intelligence and counterterrorism cooperation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">National Security Adviser HR McMaster denied the president had revealed "intelligence sources or methods," but acknowledged that Trump and Lavrov "reviewed a range of common threats to our two countries, including threats to civil aviation."</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Post, citing unnamed officials, said that Trump went off script during the meeting, describing details about a Daesh terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on airplanes, revealing the city where the information was gathered.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Trump administration recently barred the use of laptops in the passenger cabin from several countries in the Middle East and is mulling the expansion of that ban to cover jets originating in Europe.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"There's nothing that the president takes more seriously than the security of the American people. The story that came out tonight as reported is false," McMaster said without elaborating on which elements were wrong.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"Two other senior officials who were present, including the secretary of state, remember the meeting the same way and have said so. Their on-the-record accounts should outweigh those of anonymous sources. I was in the room. It didn't happen."</p>
<p dir="ltr">McMaster earlier refused to answer questions to a group of journalists gathered in the West Wing, saying "this is the last place I wanted to be" before leaving.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The revelations are the latest in a wave of crises to hit the White House, which late Monday was in a state of shock, with aides frantically trying to put out the fire and determine the source of such damaging leaks.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Since coming to office in January, Trump has lurched from crisis to crisis, lampooning the intelligence services, law enforcement and the media along the way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Last week, Trump threw his administration into turmoil by taking the virtually unprecedented step of firing his FBI director James Comey.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Comey had been overseeing investigations into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russia to skew the 2016 election.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The meeting came a day after that firing, and was already controversial in itself, a red carpet welcome for top aides of Vladimir Putin just months after being hit with US sanctions for meddling in the 2016 presidential election.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trump's administration was left red-faced after Moscow surprised them by releasing pictures of what was meant to be a closed-door meeting.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><b>Ryan wants 'full explanation'</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">For Trump's already weary allies in Congress, the latest crisis brought more headaches and demanded yet more explanation from an administration that is struggling to leave its legislative mark.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"We have no way to know what was said, but protecting our nation's secrets is paramount," said Doug Andres, a spokesperson for Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"The speaker hopes for a full explanation of the facts from the administration."</p>
<p dir="ltr">Senior Republican Senator John McCain told CNN that "if it's true, it's obviously disturbing." But he cautioned: "Let's wait and see what this was all about first."</p>
<p dir="ltr">Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer accused Trump of potentially putting American lives at risk.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"If the report is true, it is very disturbing. Revealing classified information at this level is extremely dangerous and puts at risk the lives of Americans and those who gather intelligence for our country," he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"The president owes the intelligence community, the American people and Congress a full explanation."</p>
